How to read the rain map

  • Rain: light blue is light rain or snow, dark blue is moderate, purple and red are heavy to very heavy precipitation.
  • Time bar: drag right or press ▶ to watch rain and snow move in 3-hour steps over the coming days. Times are Eastern Time on this page.
  • Temperature, Wind, Clouds, Pressure: switch layers at the top of the map. Low-pressure areas (purple, dark blue) often bring storms, heavy rain or snow; tight swirls over the ocean can be tropical storms or hurricanes.
  • State names on the map show the current temperature at the state capital; tap one to open that state's detailed rain map. Zoom in to see more states.

The map is computed from numerical forecast models, so the position and intensity of rain may differ from reality, especially for summer afternoon thunderstorms. It is not live radar. During severe weather follow the National Weather Service warnings, and see our Hurricane tracker.
