Tips for farmers and growers

  • Spray pesticides and herbicides when winds are between 3 and 10 mph, with no rain expected for at least 6 hours and no temperature inversion (avoid calm, foggy early mornings); always follow the product label.
  • Cut and bale hay on sunny, breezy days with humidity below 75% and no rain in the forecast for 2–3 days.
  • Plant after the last spring frost; when frost is forecast, cover tender plants, irrigate before the cold night and protect water lines.
  • Before heavy rain, clear drainage ditches and avoid applying manure or fertilizer that can run off into streams.
  • Give livestock shade, airflow and plenty of water when the THI is above 72, and avoid working cattle in the afternoon heat.
  • For drought conditions see the U.S. Drought Monitor; for official crop weather, the USDA and your state extension service.
