Humidity, dew point and how to beat muggy weather

The dew point is the temperature at which moisture in the air condenses into droplets. The closer the dew point is to the air temperature, the more humid and sticky it feels. A dew point above 64° feels muggy and above 70° oppressive, and when walls, floors, windows or air-conditioned surfaces are cooler than the dew point, water forms on them. In the US this is most common in the Southeast and along the Gulf Coast in summer, after heavy rain and on still, overcast days.

  • Keep air moving: use electric fans and open windows when it is drier outside, and close them during very humid, rainy spells.
  • Run a dehumidifier, or set the air conditioner to Dry mode, to bring indoor humidity down.
  • Wipe damp floors with a dry cloth, and place moisture absorbers or silica gel in cabinets and closets to prevent mould.
  • Avoid drying laundry indoors without ventilation; use a dryer or iron clothes well before storing them.
  • Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade: high humidity raises the heat index and makes it harder for your body to cool down.
  • Watch your step, as wet floors and stairs can be slippery.

The muggy index on this page is an estimate by WeatherUS30Day, based on humidity and dew point compared with the lowest temperature of the preceding hours and days (a proxy for wall and floor temperatures). It is for reference only.
